On August 24th 1994 a parishioner saw what appeared to be an image of the Virgin Mary high on the back wall of the church to the right of the altar. The virgin was veiled and leaning over the child standing on her lap. The incumbent priest, Fr Andrew Notere reported it to Bishop Graham Walden, and eventually after two years, the image was acknowledged by the Parish Council and a wrought iron frame was placed around it. An article in the Advertiser in 1996 attracted attention and pilgrims began to come to the town. Sometime later the image appeared to show Mary with the prostrate Jesus across her lap after the crucifixion, known as a ‘pieta’.

Even now we still have many pilgrims coming to Christ Church Yankalilla, especially those who count the Virgin Mary as an important part of their worship. This includes members of the Kerula Church in southern India who attend their church service in Adelaide, and attend our Sunday Services.

Reports of miracles that have happened after visiting the shrine are many and we give thanks to God that he has made his presence known through the "Shrine of the Lady of Yankalilla"

The Shrine in the church is open daily between 10am and 5pm for viewing and quiet prayer. Filled in Prayer Cards and prayers written in the special book are presented on the altar at the Sunday Mass where they are offered to Almighty God for His blessing. Visitors are able to light a candle in memory after they have written their special prayer needs
The Outdoor Shrine area is in need of refurbishment and an appeal has been established to do justice to the area.

The Outdoor Shrine upgrade has commenced and here we see Peter Seschmay hard at work preparing the ground for the pavers shortly to be added. This will be followed by screening (hedge) on either side of the shrine and an entry fence created from bluestone rocks. Picnic tables will be included in the church ground for families to visit the shrine and to bring lunch with them.

In addition to this, an outdoor set of "Stations of the Cross" will be included in the church grounds.
